Lilacs and easter eggs

Every year, the Greek Orthodox Church celebrates Easter in the most prodigious of ways. It is the most important religious feast of the year and this means that Greeks around the world stick to the traditions surrounding this holiday reverently.

Easter wouldn't be Easter without Easter eggs. This is well-known. Well, in Greece it is the red Easter eggs that dominate dining tables and coffee tables, fireplace mantles and sideboards, end tables and display cabinets.

They are traditionally dyed during the Holy Week leading up to Easter Sunday, and more specifically on Holy Thursday. The red color symbolizes Christ's blood, while the egg itself (a symbol of life) is a metaphor of the tomb Christ's body was placed in.

Nowadays, an array of dyes are sold on the market and so eggs decorating the grand Easter Sunday meal (you can't exactly call it lunch since it practically lasts all day long) can be found in a variety of colors.
